THE MAKING OF:

THE BELLBOARD

1. We will explain here how we airbrush a canvas. First we design the lay out. In this case we do this in co-operation with the film producer (Dave Schram). Once he has approved the lay out, we can start to airbrush.

2. The design is projected on a PVC canvas. First the outline of the picture of the main character and the title are drawn. Then we fill in the title with one basic colour using a mask.

3. The projector is removed and colour is added to both the picture of the main character and the title using the layout for colour reference. We start with the light colours and work on to the dark colours, using different layers. We add yellow paint where the title will appear in order to have this part of the background colour in place.

4. The title and the picture of the main character are almost ready. We only need to finish the title.

5. Now the title, main character and the text above the title can be covered up so that we can airbrush the background.

6. Once the background has been airbrushed, the mask foil can be removed.

7. For an optimum contrast the darkest shades of colour used on the canvas will only be airbrushed once the background has been finished. Then we can get a better impression of the total image.

8. The whole image is airbrushed in two stages because our airbrush studio is not high enough to hang the whole canvas. After rolling out the lower part of the canvas, we add a light background colour to it. In preparation for the lower text, cut out by a computer, is added.

9. Both the main character and the top part of the image are finished.

10. The gaps in the masks are filled in with red paint. After removing the mask foil, a black shadow is added to the text. This is done with a paintbrush.

11. The canvas is almost ready. The only thing that has to be added is a final transparent coating to even out the quality of the overall colour.

12. The painting is hung by Airbrush Studio Trojka on the Leidseplein using a rented tower waggon.

13.Finished! Another beautiful piece of work and satisfied customer.
